This initiative, known as the Silverstar Soccer Stars Tournament, comprises 32 teams and will be launched on 20 March 2010 at the Lusaka Sports Complex in Swanieville.

"Many of our staff members live in these communities and they often voiced dissatisfaction that their children had no extra-curricular activities," mentioned Johannes Hadebe, HR Manager and Head of Corporate Social Initiatives at Silverstar Casino.

Although soccer fever is gripping the country in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ it is a mere a coincidence that this tournament kicks off prior to that event. The primary school segment will comprise 22 participating schools of scholars under the age of 12 years old, and the secondary schools will boast 10 teams of scholars under the age of 16 years old. Two tournaments will be held this year where after an elite coaching clinic will train 40 children showing the most potential.

"This schools tournament is huge for our community. Silverstar Casino has ensured that all catering and transport spend emanates from these communities thus involving as many people from there," explains Johannes. "The kids are incredibly eager and are pleased that soccer has finally arrived in their communities. The Gauteng department of education and the Dreamfields Project have been roped in to assist with all the logistics."

In order to ensure the sustainability of this tournament, Silverstar Casino will provide transport to the schools on an ongoing basis, giving the teams no excuses for not attending the activities. In addition a full soccer kit will be provided to each player on the condition that each person takes personal responsibility for ensuring that the kit is not lost. "We want to instil a level of commitment from each player and emphasise to them accountability, responsibility and motivation. 18 February 2010 | Silverstar lights up regional roads with new streetlight installations

Silverstar Casino is once again showing their commitment to the local community by installing streetlights on a section of Hendrik Potgieter Road.

The general lack of ambient light in the area around the casino and specifically on Hendrik Potgieter was a major cause of concern for many local motorists as they felt their security threatened by the darkness. After hearing the same concerns from many guests and their staff in the two years since opening, the management of Silverstar Casino decided to find a workable solution to the problem.

Silverstar approached the Mogale City municipality to find out how best to work on solving the problem and the council was happy to help and support any initiative that would improve safety in the area. Silverstar then approached an independent service provider, Light-be, who were in turn were contracted to erect streetlights. The street light installation is being funded by Silverstar, but the lights will be maintained by the Mogale City Council going forward.

Starting at the intersection of Hendrik Potgieter and the R28, the first phase of street light installation consist of 59 lamps running 2.7km to the entrance of Ruimsig Estates. The lamps are all 400W energy efficient halide, which has a whiter light that allow for better radiance, similar to that seen in sports stadiums around the country.

The second phase of streetlights commissioned by Silverstar will begin at the R28 and follow Falls Road through to Furrow Road, providing much needed lighting to this well travelled road off of Hendrik Potgieter.

The lights are being turned on as they are completed, so motorists in the area will already be reaping the benefits of Silverstar's contribution to the community.

"We are very grateful to the Mogale City Municipality for allowing us to work with them to ensure better lighting and improved safety on the roads in our area. Listening to our guests is a key part of what we do at Silverstar – and being able to provide this solution to their needs gives us all great pleasure," said Mike Vermaak, General Manager of Silverstar Casino.

Silverstar Casino is determined to live up to their promise of being a leader in the local community and this initiative is just one of many community based initiatives in which the casino is involved. Further support and funding is earmarked for the community in 2010, with projects being rolled out in areas that most need assistance.
